Truly understanding and deepening into our experience of yoga can be difficult if our only opportunity of yoga is general group classes or retreats.

To really deepen into yoga, and the benefits it can bring to our lives, we must combine knowledge-based learnings with our own embodied and felt personal experiences.

We invite you to come explore the illuminating wisdom of what yoga is really all about, whether or not you are on a pathway to becoming a yoga teacher, or have even completed a previous 200hr Teacher Training course. All you need is a love of yoga, a sense that there's so much more, and feel ready to let yoga change your life for the better!

Our 150-hour Yoga Studies course exists so everyone can access the life-enriching wisdoms and practices, not just those seeking to become teachers.

This course is also designed to help those who have done some formal study of yoga before to upgrade their qualification, adding valuable hours and knowledge to prior studies.   Irrespective of the traditions or lineage you may have already delved into, our 150-hour course can help you upgrade and open the door to more advanced trainings like yoga therapy training.

How is the 150-hour Course Structured?

Classroom Learning (In-person and online)

Classroom-based training in our Cammeray studio: Select from Fridays (fortnightly) or Weekends (monthly)

plus

Mid-week evening webinars (about once a month) with curriculum lectures and, wellbeing check-ins, and community support & encouragement (also recorded if you cannot join us live)

Experiential and Self-directed Learning

Online learning - In between visits to our Cammeray studio, you'll enjoy access to our online learning portal with readings, videos, audio recordings and other resources.

We will guide you which resources and topics to  focus on between studio visits, but you'll enjoy the flexibility of doing your home study at times of the day that suit you best.

Knowledge integration - Also from the comfort of your own home, you will have time to allow new knowledge to be fully processed, this is the key to long-term retention.  Intensive courses may not allow you such time to really process everything you are learning.  You need time to reflect and let information 'drop'.

Home practice and experimentation - You will also be practising certain techniques at home, possibly journalling the experiences.

Individual Mentoring Sessions

3 one-on-one sessions with an experienced yoga teacher

Includes development and guidance of your personal yoga practice and study assistance / supervision

General yoga classes*

Training days in Cammeray include a compulsory morning yoga class (no extra cost).  In addition to starting your day well, these yoga classes on your training days are designed to help illuminate a particular learning of your course content.

You are also encouraged to attend in-person classes between your visits to Cammeray. We will give you guidance on what characteristics to look for in your extra-curricular classes that will best complement your course.  Cost of these extra-curricular classes are not part of your course fees and will depend on the teacher/studio you attend.

Regular Personal Practice (at home)

Your assigned mentor will design a special yoga practice tailored to your needs and circumstances, so you will have a wonderful, beneficial and appropriate practice to enjoy at home on your own every day.

This may include asana, pranayama and meditation techniques.

*  Please note: General yoga classes outside of your training program are not included in course fees

Since 2001 we've taught and mentored hundreds of students who have gone on to pivot the trajectory of their life and become amazing yoga teachers. We've grown a beautiful community of people who have transformed their own lives, and that support and care for one another. We are humbled to have been part of so much positive change.

We hope you'll join us for the next step on your yoga journey...

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is on The Yoga Institute Faculty?

This course is led by Senior Yoga Teacher, Yoga Therapist, Registered Psychologist, PhD Graduate and Course Director, Michael de Manincor.

Michael is joined by an incredible faculty of senior yoga teachers and yoga therapists. Learn more about our faculty: The Yoga Institute Faculty

Is This a Registered Yoga Teacher Training Course?

It's important to understand that the 150-hour course is not a teacher training course by itself.

The peak body for Australia's yoga industry is Yoga Australia. Yoga Australia has determined that the minimum training requirement to become a registered yoga teacher in Australia and be eligible for full membership of the association, requires a yoga teacher to have completed at least 350 hours of training over a minimum of 1 year.

The 150hr Heart of Yoga (Teacher Training Foundations) course is the first module of The Yoga Institute's 500-hour Yoga Teacher Training Course. Completing this module allows you time to decide if you wish to proceed on with our 500-hour course and progress towards becoming a registered yoga teacher.

If you are already a 200-hour trained yoga teacher, the completion of the 150-hour course upgrades your skills and makes you eligible to apply for membership with Yoga Australia as a Level-1 yoga teacher.

Are There Any Pre-requisites or Prior Learning for This Course?

None at all!  We want you to feel sure that you love yoga and feel eager to go further.

  • It is desirable (but not essential) that you have been practicing Yoga regularly for a few years, and feel motivated to further study and practice of Yoga in the tradition of T Krishnamacharya.
  • As Yoga is designed for the needs of each unique individual person, there is no requirement for particular levels of fitness or ability to do Yoga postures.
  • This program includes intensive periods of study and Yoga practice, and require dedication and commitment to self-discovery through Yoga.
  • Acceptance into the course is subject to the discretion of the course director.
  • If you have undertaken related studies, recognition of prior learning (RPL) can be explored with the course director.
  • Our in-house Asana manual  is available for purchase when you begin your studies
What Style of Yoga Does The Yoga Institute Teach?

Our approach to Yoga is based on the world-renowned teachings from the tradition and lineage of T Krishnamacharya (often described as the ‘father of modern yoga’) and his son TKV Desikachar.

The focus is on integrating all aspects of yogic practice including asana, pranayama, meditation, mantra, mudras, philosophy and psychology, and adapting all practices to the individual.  The emphasis is on applying the ancient wisdom and practices of yoga to the challenges of modern lives.

As Krishnamacharya said: “Yoga must be made to suit the individual, not the individual to suit the yoga.”

Are There Any Assessments in This Course?

For those who wish to participate in a course for their own personal development and experience of Yoga, and do not wish to go on to become certified as Yoga Teachers, no formal assessments are required.

To be eligible to go on to further studies to gain certification and registration as a Yoga Teacher or Yoga Therapist, a variety of assessments are required. These include demonstration of knowledge, competencies and skills relevant to each course unit and commitment to regular personal Yoga practice.

Minimum of 80% attendance is required for completion of the module. In special circumstances, alternative arrangements may be made with the course director to meet the requirements of the course.

What Further Training Can I Do After This Course?

Completion of this course allows you to continue seamlessly onto our full 500-Hour Yoga Teacher Training course, the 150-hours are effectively Recognised Prior Learning towards your 500-hours.

If you have already done a 200-hour teacher training, the 150-hour course allows you to a Level-1 registered yoga teacher with Yoga Australia, and opens the doorway to more advanced trainings such as Yoga Therapy.

What Will I Need At Home For This Course?

You will need access to a computer/desktop/laptop, so you can access the learning portal at home to read, watch and study at your leisure at home, in between visits to Cammeray.

Ideally you will also have a yoga mat at home you can use.

Lastly, we encourage you to help those who share your household grow accustomed to your need for quiet reflection, practice and study time, on a regular basis each week.
