A Beginners Guide to Yoga

Firstly welcome to the Yoga Institute. Here are some FAQ’s about getting started with yoga which we hope inspire you to give it go!

“I’ve never done yoga, what’s the best way to get started?”

A beginners course is the best way to start, this way you will receive guidance through the foundation poses and basic breathing techniques. Alternatively a one-on-one private session if you have a injury/ specific health condition. This way you can get a practise that is personalised to meet your needs.

“I’m not flexible, I can’t touch my toes, can I do yoga? “

No problem. We are all different. We will happily modify postures so they are appropriate for you. Also practising yoga regularly will improve your flexibility, so you will notice your toes getting closer and closer….

“What should I wear to a yoga class?”

Wear some comfortable loose fitting clothes, perhaps a t-shirt or singlet top that allows movement and pants such as dance tights, tracksuit pants or shorts.

“Do I need a mat? Where can I get one from ?”

You can buy a mat from us or you can use one of our mats at the centre. We are offering a discounted yoga mat to our beginner students and we also sell eye pillows and yoga mat bags.

“Should I do anything special to prepare before a class”

As yoga is best practised on an empty stomach, please refrain from eating for at least an hour and a half before the class.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the class starts.

“How will I know what to do in the class?”

Our trained teachers will lead you through the practice, carefully explaining and guiding you through each pose. Also we encourage you to listen to your body. If a posture does not feel right or hurts, please let the teacher know so it can be modified to best suit you.

“Why should I practice Yoga?

Yoga can help to calm the mind, strengthen and bring balance to your body, increase your self awareness and an overall sense of wellbeing.

E-Motion is a powerful and personally driven documentary produced by Justin Lyons. The genesis for E-Motion began more than 7 years ago when Justin witnessed the traumatic death of his long-time friend and colleague Steve Irwin, best known as the Crocodile Hunter. This event had a profound effect on Justin and set him on the path to create E-Motion.

Stephanie Lopez imgreshas been studying yoga for 21 years and teaching yoga and meditation for over a decade. She holds a masters degree in Clinical Social Work and is a Gestalt therapist who interweaves iRest® yoga nidra and self inquiry into her clinical practice. She also has a private practice devoted solely to iRest® work, specializing in difficult emotions, beliefs, and developing an individual practice.

Stephanie is the Director of Operations at the Integrative Restoration Institute, along with serving as a Senior iRest Trainer, Retreat Leader and Supervisor. Her compassionate presence, depth of knowledge, and love of this work create a welcoming space for insightful learning. Stephanie offers workshops, retreats and iRest Teacher Trainings internationally.

Fuyuko Sawamura-Toyota Bio picture Fuyukois a certified iRest® Senior Trainer, Retreat Leader and Supervisor/Mentor. For the past 20 years she has been deeply committed on the path of Yoga and ancient Non-dual wisdom. She is also a qualified Hatha Yoga teacher since 1996.

She incorporates iRest and Self-Inquiry in her teachings of Yoga, Somatic body awareness and meditation at her yoga studio “Prema Yoga” on the Gold Coast, Australia and internationally.

In 2007, Richard Miller, her spiritual mentor, brought to Fuyuko a deeper understanding of living life in a non dual way. For those of you who attended iRest Level 1 training and who are psychologists, the APS provides the following information regarding CPD points:

“Registered psychologists are required to complete a set number of continuing professional development (CPD) hours as a requirement of ongoing registration. There is no accreditation or approval process for CPD for psychologists, but rather individual psychologists must be able to justify selection of particular CPD according to their individual learning needs.”

Therefore, if you can justify the counting of iRest training towards your continuing professional development as a psychologist (which doesn’t seem difficult given the research about its application and effectiveness for mental health and well being), then you may claim the hours!”

Yoga for Strength and Flexibility – 10 WK Term – Starts Tuesday 13th October

Yoga for Strength & Flexibility with Bronwyn

Join Bronwyn on a Tuesday morning to strengthen and ease you body as well as clear your mind.

In this class you will be guided through a range of classical yoga postures (asana) as well as some gentle flowing sequences to develop strength, balance, and flexibility.
It is also an effective practice to regain healthy spinal mobility, particularly into the upper thoracic area of the spine that has a tendency to become restricted over time.
